Who are the “Busby Babes” of Manchester United?

Although the tragedy affected the members of Manchester United team, it is said to have been the start of Man U’s history as the English football team with the most number of wins.

The Busby Babes were called as such for being the group of young players recruited some time in 1953, by Sir Matt Busby for the Man United football club. During their stint, Manchester United won 2 Football League Championships. At that time and through the
Busby team’s impressive performances, Man U became the first English team to have qualified to n the newly launched European Cup competition, known today as the UEFA Championship League.

The young men immediately gained fame in Europe for beating the Belgian champion Anderlecht, after garnering an impressive 10-0 score. However, they didn’t make it past the semi-final round as they lost to the formidable Real Madrid. The latter won the European Cup yearly between 1956 and 1960.

Nevertheless, Manchester United won its first European Cup in 1968, which made them the first English football club to win the European competition. In 1999 and in 2008, Manchester United claimed two more European Cups as champions of the respective annual seasons.
